History
The site held a medieval St. George church, an Ottoman Great Mosque and then an 18th-century Jesuit church, demolished in the early 20th century. Banker Zsigmond Szana, who founded Szana Bank in 1906, commissioned the palace as its headquarters; it was built in 1921-1922 to designs by Josef Kremer Jr. The bank financed firms such as the Timișoreana brewery and Kandia chocolate. The building later housed an insurance company, the British Consulate, the Orizont magazine and the Timișoara Writers' Union. A cultural hall opened in 2023, and the palace is now marketed by Romania Sotheby's as restored.
