Summary

An early Banat manor built in 1733-1734 in Carani, named after Count Claudius Florimund Mercy, governor of the Banat. It is now a fenced-off, severely degraded ruin standing in the yard of a cereal company.

Legal status

Nationalised c. 1948; restituted after 1989 to a descendant; surrounding land bought 1991 by a cereal company ↗

History

The castle was built in 1733-1734 when the colony of Mercydorf was founded, named after Banat governor Claudius Florimund Mercy, who died in 1734 and probably never lived there. In 1780 Count János Saurau bought the domain from the Treasury; from 1805 to 1870 it belonged to the Lo Presti de la Fontana D'Angioli family, then briefly again to Saurau. The last noble owners were the Feger de Mercyfalva family. It was nationalised and used as an agricultural cooperative headquarters until 1989. It was then returned to an heir, while the surrounding land was bought in 1991 by a local cereal company. The basement has collapsed, timbers have rotted, and a renovation attempt was abandoned.
