Summary
A late Baroque palace built in 1880 by Italian craftsmen in Comănești (Bacău County), now housing the Dimitrie Ghika ethnography and art museum under the Bacău County Council. Its ownership has been contested between the town and a Ghika descendant, who advertised it for sale in 2017.
Legal status
According to Profit.ro, the Court of Appeal Bacău recognised a private descendant as heir with ownership rights over the palace and park ↗
History
The palace was built in 1880 in late Baroque style by Italian craftsmen; Romanian Wikipedia, citing Nicolae Iorga (1916), names Albert Galleron as architect. It stood in a park of about 7.4 ha belonging to the Ghika family. From 1945 to 1988 it served as the Pioneers' House. In 1988 it was handed over to the county museum, which opened a Trotuș Valley ethnography exhibition in 1989 and a contemporary Romanian art exhibition in 1995. The museum, now named after Dimitrie Ghika, is subordinate to the Bacău County Council. In July 2017 a descendant listed the palace and park on OLX for 1.6 million EUR, negotiable; according to Profit.ro, a court ruling recognised him as heir with ownership rights in a case against Comănești town hall. The present ownership situation is unclear.
