Legal status
Claims by the Știrbei family blocked a 1994 restoration plan; heirs won ownership in court after 2000 ↗
History
The palace was completed in 1906 for Gheorghe Știrbei and Elisabeta Baleanu to plans by Nicolae Ghika-Budești, with Italian and German craftsmen. It has four levels, an L-shaped wing and a terrace with wide stairs, and a water supply system was added in 1908 by German engineers. The family used it seasonally, and some rooms served as a hospital for wounded soldiers in the world wars, run by Marina Știrbei. Under communism it was a pneumonia hospital and later a school camp. A 1994 restoration plan was never carried out because of claims by the Știrbei family; after 2000 the heirs obtained ownership in court and later sold it to a private entrepreneur. Local authorities have discussed acquiring it to bring it into the tourist circuit.
