History
The castle was built in the late 19th century (one source says 1905) as a hunting residence and holiday home for the Ghika family, designed by an Italian architect. From 1941 to 1944 it housed the Wehrmacht command. It was nationalised and used as a TB hospital, a children's home and a paediatric sanatorium, which, together with the wartime occupation, seriously damaged it. No heir claimed it after 1989 and it passed to the Dofteana local council. In late 2003 it was sold to Mecano Electro Service Dărmănești for 6.2 billion old lei; a fire about a month later destroyed about 80% of the roof and attic. The owner planned restoration, and recent articles describe conservation work, a six-apartment guesthouse in the former dovecote and event rentals.
