Summary
A neo-Gothic palace on Calea Unirii in Craiova designed by the French architect Paul Gottereau for the landowner Constantin Dinu Mihail and completed in 1907. Since 1954 it has housed the Craiova Art Museum.
History
Landowner Constantin Dinu Mihail (1837-1908) commissioned the palace from the French architect Paul Gottereau; it was built around 1900-1907 and inaugurated in 1909 by his son, the businessman Jean Mihail. It hosted King Carol I and Ferdinand, among other guests. Jean Mihail left it to the nation on his death, in 1936. In World War II it housed the German command for Oltenia, and afterwards the Soviet command. The Art Museum opened here in August 1954, with the Pinacoteca Alexandru and Aristia Aman as its core.
