Summary
An eclectic manor in the grounds of the agricultural school at Malu Mare, Dolj County, tied to the Câncea and Poenaru families. Confiscated under communism, its estate became a veterinary and later agricultural school, and the manor itself stands empty and deteriorated.
History
Malu Mare is first attested in 1494. According to one account the manor was built in 1896 by a local landowner; a 2021 blog names the boyar Nicolae Câncea as its builder. The property passed to his daughter Aurora Câncea, who married the magistrate Constantin Poenaru. A 1912 valuation of the estate lists forests, a pond, orchards, granaries, a storehouse, an administration house and a stable, and a staircase was ordered for it from a Bucharest workshop. The Poenaru family property was confiscated under communism. In 1961 a technical veterinary school was set up on the estate, later renamed several times and most recently called Grup Școlar Agricol, with new buildings added beside the manor. A 2019 visit found some floors collapsed but the roof still holding.
