Summary

A French-eclectic manor in Padea (Drănic commune, Dolj County), built in 1907 for the banker N. N. Popp to designs by the architect Ion D. Berindey. Restored from 2013 and in private hands, it now serves mainly as an events venue with guest rooms.

History

The manor was built in 1907 at the request of the banker N. N. Popp (Nene Popp) as the family residence, designed by Ion D. Berindey. According to one account, the name of Popp's wife, Relly, is engraved on the façade. The writer Alexandru Kirițescu, married to one of Popp's daughters, set his comedy Gaițele in the house, and the estate is said to have been a hunting ground of King Carol II. In 1945 the building became a preventorium for children, and sources describe a difficult period under communism. From 2013 it was brought back to life by a private owner who restored it, partly with European funding, keeping Berindey's style. Today it is used mainly for events, with accommodation for those who book them.
