Wass Castle, Țaga
Castelul Wass din Țaga · Wass-kastély (Cege)
sat Țaga; comuna Țaga, Cluj · 139
Summary
A Transylvanian Baroque manor-castle in Țaga (Cluj County), the surviving smaller seat of the Wass de Czege family, dated 1769. Its flanking pavilions and library were lost, and the main block survives, reportedly partly inhabited.
History
The Wass family acquired Țaga by marriage in the 15th century and built two castles there; only the smaller one remains, dated 1769. Samuel Wass reinforced it and added two artesian wells in the courtyard, and repairs followed in 1848 and 1875. The large castle, begun by György Wass (1658-1705), was entirely demolished after the Second World War. After the 1946 conviction of the writer Albert Wass, the manor became the seat of a state agricultural enterprise.
