Summary
A single-storey hunting castle of 1761 on a hilltop in Chiochiș (Bistrița-Năsăud County), linked to the Wesselényi family and Baroness Polixenia Daniel. Used at various times as a land registry office, tribunal, cooperative HQ and inn, it was reported in 2021 that its owners wish to sell it to a buyer able to restore it.
History
The castle was built in 1761; historians differ on whether it honours Baroness Polixenia Daniel, wife of Miklós Wesselényi, or was built on her orders for the widow of István Wesselényi. The Wesselényi family lost most estates after the Rákóczi uprising and kept those in Transylvania. The building later belonged to the Hungarian state and in 1888 housed the Land Registry Office and later the District Tribunal. After nationalisation by the Romanian state it was the HQ of an agricultural cooperative (CAP). After 1989 part operated as an inn and part as dwellings; the basement was once used for milk and meat processing. A 2021 news report says the present owners want to sell it to someone able to restore it.
