Summary

An 18th-century manor in Cămărașu (Pusztakamarás), Cluj County, remodelled in Neoclassical style in the 19th century and linked to the Kemény family and the novelist Zsigmond Kemény. It is now a roofless ruin of which only wall sections, column fragments and a tower remain.

History

The village was first recorded in 1322, and earlier owners of the estate included János Ungor of Nádasd, the Laczkfi family and the Bishopric of Oradea before it became a Kemény possession. The single-storey manor, with a four-column porch and a square multi-storey tower at the rear that may be its oldest part, dates from the 18th century. The novelist Zsigmond Kemény, born in 1814, spent his last years here and died in 1875. At the end of the Second World War the manor was attacked and looted and its library destroyed. In 1949 Béla Kemény II and Géza Kemény's family were deported, and the other Kemény house on the estate was demolished. The cooperative that used the manor added outbuildings. After 1989 the roof collapsed and the building decayed quickly. It is now owned by a company, which reportedly put it up for sale in 2026.
