Summary

A 52-room Grassalkovich-style late-Baroque castle (1772-1803) with a dendrological park in Gornești, Mureș, designed by the Mayerhoffers. Returned to the Teleki family (restitution 2006, possession 2011), it was restored for EUR 4.6 million from the PNRR and reopened to the public on 1 August 2026.

Legal status

Nationalised 1949; retroceded to the Teleki heirs in 2006, in their possession from 2011 ↗

History

The estate passed from the Bánffy family to Mihály Teleki after 1674; the present castle was built from 1772 to 1803 to plans by Andreas and József Mayerhoffer. After World War II it was looted and its library destroyed; it was nationalised in 1949 and in 1956 became a children's tuberculosis preventorium (renovated 1961-1962). The state returned it to the Teleki heirs in 2006, but they took actual possession only in 2011 and then opened it for tourism and an annual Castle Day. A restoration of almost three years, funded through the PNRR, renewed the roof and services and restored the murals (about 30% of the original painting survived). The castle reopened on 1 August 2026, with a museum of folk costume in four rooms and a planned museum of the history of the aristocracy. The castle remains in the ownership of the Teleki family.
