History
Ladislau (László) Nopcsa, supreme count of Hunedoara County from 1833, retired to Zam after resigning in 1848. On 3 November 1848 Hungarian insurgents devastated the castle, and they returned on 2 December to demolish it. It lay in ruins for about three decades until a Viennese lawyer named Lekisch rebuilt it in 1879. The last private owner, Count Mihály Csernovics, accumulated heavy debts; the castle was confiscated and passed to the Romanian state. It now serves as a psychiatric hospital. The building's square block with a semicircular three-sided central bay is attributed to 1879, with an elongated part added around 1900.
