History
The site first appears in 1228 as the castle of Vecheu, granted by King Andrew II to Dénes of the Tomaj kindred, and it later passed through the Losonczi and Bánffy families. Ferenc Kendi built or remodelled the castle between 1537 and 1558, and later owners included the Báthory, Bethlen and Rákóczi families. The estate and five villages were given to János Kemény in 1648, and the Kemény family kept it until nationalisation in 1949. Baron János Kemény hosted the Erdélyi Helikon writers' meetings here from 1926. After 1949 it served as a correctional institution for minors and then a care home for disabled children. The family only regained possession in 2014, after a 2006 agreement set a transition period.
