History
The Gurghiu fortress and domain are mentioned from 1358. In the 1640s Prince György Rákóczi I built a Renaissance hunting manor at the foot of the fortress hill. In 1717 the estate was granted for 99 years to Vice-Chancellor Ioan Bornemisza and his descendants, who extended the castle in Baroque and Neoclassical styles and laid out the park. It later returned to the state and was used as a hunting lodge, and from 1893 housed a forestry school. In 2008 it was handed to the Mureș County Museum. A 2019 report said restoration after about 12 years of closure was nearly finished.
