Summary

A late Baroque two-storey noble residence in Șieu, Bistrița-Năsăud County, generally known as the Kemény Castle. Monumente Uitate lists it as accessible and in use as the town hall.

History

Local tradition credits Count Sámuel Kemény with the building, and it was probably a hunting lodge. It does not appear in the 1769-1773 Josephine surveys, so it was most likely built after 1785. It stands on the southern side of the village beside the road to Posmuș and has an elongated rectangular plan, a central projecting bay with the main staircase, and a mansard roof. The village had belonged to the Kacsics, Tomaj, Salgai, Bánffy and Hunyadi families, then to Sigismund Báthory and the Apafi family, and from the 18th century formed part of the Kemény estates. Romanian Wikipedia describes the building today as a school of arts and crafts.
