History

Cuci was held in the 17th century by Count Lőrinc Pekry and his wife, the poet Kata Szidónia Petrőczy, who built the first manor. After Pekry died in 1709 the estate passed to the Wesselényi and then Teleki families. In 1800 Anna Teleki married Count Miksa Degenfeld-Schomburg and the estate went to the Degenfelds. The old manor was demolished and a new mansion built in the early 19th century; around 1907 Lajos Degenfeld modernised it and added two side wings, and his son Kristóf later ran a model farm there. The estate was nationalised in 1949 and the building served as a cooperative store and, after the 1970 flood, as town hall, medical office and library. The family recovered the castle in 2004 and took effective possession in 2010 once the institutions left; it opened to the public in 2020 and a detail of the main façade was restored in 2022.
