History
The estate of about 1,700 hectares was leased from the Treasury by Samuel von Brukenthal for 99 years, and the castle dates from the 18th-19th centuries; one source says it was built in 1750-1760 by serfs of a brother of Samuel von Brukenthal. A stud farm was probably created by the Brukenthals for Lipizzaner breeding, and the Romanian state re-established it in 1920. After nationalisation a fire in 1949 did no considerable damage; in 1950 the roof was replaced and parts repainted, probably erasing part of the ballroom frescoes. The castle then housed administrative offices and by the late 1990s stood unused and deteriorating. Since 2002 the estate has belonged to Romsilva and the stud. A plan for a Lipizzaner history museum in the building was never carried out.
