Legal status

Nationalised under communism; the Church regained the castle in 1999 ↗

History

Baron Samuel von Brukenthal, governor of Transylvania, began the summer residence around 1783 and laid out gardens with an orangery where he grew exotic fruit. In 1908 the Evangelical Church bought the castle from the heirs and turned it into a sanatorium, a use that continued after nationalisation and included a maternity hospital. The Church regained the castle in 1999. It is now the seat of the Brukenthal Foundation, which manages it for the Evangelical Church; the building is described as under renovation and in urgent need of restoration, with a museum, concert hall or conference centre considered as future uses.
