Castelul Turnu Roșu · Vöröstorony vára
sat Boița; comuna Boița, Sibiu · Str. Traian 342
Summary
A medieval border fortress on the Olt guarding the Red Tower Pass, first documented in 1453. It served as an orphanage and children's placement centre from 1917 to 2003 and is now slated for rehabilitation.
History
The castle was built in the 14th century to guard the main pass between Transylvania and Wallachia; its exact date is unknown. It is first mentioned on 3 February 1453 in a charter of Ladislaus Postumus, when it passed under the Saxon Seven Seats, with a castellan from the Sibiu patriciate. A second, hexagonal tower was ordered by Matthias Corvinus in the later 15th century. After 1699 it came under Habsburg command, with new works from 1739 and further fortifications in 1877-1878; it also served as a customs post until 1918. Fighting took place in the area in 1916. From 1917 to 2003 it was an orphanage and later a psychiatric facility. According to Wikipedia, it was removed from the hospital's administration to qualify for EU funds, and technical documentation was completed in 2025.
