Summary

A manor house in Mălâncrav (Laslea commune, Sibiu County) that was long the seat of the Apafi family and later passed to the Bethlens. Renovated in 2002-2007 by the Mihai Eminescu Trust, it now operates as a guesthouse.

History

Mălâncrav (Almakerék) was the Apafi family's estate centre for roughly 470 years, and the family is buried there. The manor goes back to the late 16th or early 17th century and was extended under György Apafi and later by Mihály Apafi I and Anna Bornemisza, who added rooms before 1679. In 1775, after a long lawsuit, the village passed to the Bethlen family, who remodelled the building in Classicist style in 1830. It fell into decay, was restored in 1908 and was acquired by the local Evangelical parish in 1918, serving as a prayer house, town hall, kindergarten and, under communism, a cultural house. The Mihai Eminescu Trust renovated it between 2002 and 2007 as a guesthouse, and the film Malmkrog was shot there.
