Summary
A late Renaissance quadrangular castle with corner towers and Italian-style bastions on the Târnava Mare, near Sighișoara. After use as a state-farm office it decayed from the 1990s and is now a ruin.
History
The castle was begun in 1617 by General Farkas Bethlen and extended between 1640 and 1675 by his son János Bethlen, who remodelled it in 1669 according to another account. In 1640 Gábor Haller advised on a stone wall with Italian bastions. It took its final form with an arcaded main facade in the early 19th century. After the Second World War it served as offices for a state farm until the 1970 flood of the Târnava Mare. It was largely intact in the 1980s, but beams and window frames were removed in the 1990s and the bastions were damaged.
