Summary

A classicist manor house in Cristuru Secuiesc (Székelykeresztúr), begun in 1728, famous as a Petőfi Sándor memorial site: tradition says the poet spent his last night here before the Battle of Albești in 1849. Owned by the town hall, it was restored with recovery-plan funds and inaugurated in May 2026 as an exhibition and cultural venue.

History

Construction began in 1728, in several stages, and is credited to a member of the Wesselényi family; the manor later passed by inheritance to the Gyárfás family of Leț. It sheltered revolutionary troops in 1848-49, and Petőfi and General Bem stayed overnight on 30-31 July 1849; a pear tree in the garden, where he is said to have written his last poem, is a memorial. A plaque was unveiled in 1928. In the communist era the building was a pulmonary hospital, and later a residential centre for children with disabilities, which moved out before restoration. Works funded by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan under the Attractive Romania programme (about 8 million lei) began at the end of 2024 and the manor was inaugurated in late May 2026. Plans include a permanent exhibition on the manor and Petőfi on the ground floor, a conference hall in the attic, a cellar café and accommodation for 10-12 people.
