Summary

A Baroque palace on Piața Trandafirilor in Târgu Mureș, built 1759-1772 for Count László Toldalagi, with rococo stucco on its main facade. Since 1984 it has housed the ethnography and folk art section of the Mureș County Museum.

History

Count László Toldalagi, assessor of the Tabula Regia, commissioned the palace after the Royal Table moved to the city; it is regarded as the first noble palace built there. Construction ran in stages from 1759, with the rear wing finished in 1772. János Luidor is named as designer, Pál Schmidt as contractor, and Anton Schuchbauer carved the statues and details. In the early 1940s it housed a bank. The ethnographic collection grew from acquisitions begun by Aurel Filimon in the interwar period, and the palace has been the museum's ethnography section since 1984, after rehabilitation work in 1960-1961.
