History
The Cornoiu cula was built in 1785 as a three-storey residence on a plateau above the Jiu valley. In 1927 Constantin Neamțu, governor of the National Bank in Craiova, bought the cula, water tower and land from the Cornoiu family and added a manor house and a servants' house. He fled to France in 1945. The cula was restored in 1966-1967 and the county museum, set up by a 1970 council decision, opened the open-air museum on 18 August 1975 on 13 ha with 24 relocated monuments. A final court ruling in March 2006 returned 5.312 ha to Neamțu's heirs, including the cula, manor, water tower, servants' house and 16 peasant houses; the museum kept 3.409 ha. The owner lives in France and asked for collections to be removed from the cula and manor. As of 2012 the returned part was fenced and closed to visitors.
