Summary

A late 18th-century fortified manor (cula) in Cartiu, Turcinești, about 12 km from Târgu Jiu. Restored 1997-2004, it is owned by Gorj County and houses a branch of the county museum.

Legal status

Sold by the Cartianu family to the county museum in 1974; transferred to county public domain by GD 959/2004 ↗

History

Family documents date the house to 1760, built by the wealthy boyar and ceauș Enache Cartianu, who owned over 400 ha at Cartiu; oral tradition places it at the end of the 18th century. It began as a classic cula and was altered into a house, with wooden galleries added in 1821. In 1821 Tudor Vladimirescu placed pandurs under Captain Cartianu. The Cartianu family owned it until 1974, when the last owners sold it to the Gorj County Museum. It was transferred to the county public domain in 2004 by Government Decision 959. Restoration ran from 1997 to 2004 and it now houses the Museum of Gorj Ethnography and Folk Art.
