Summary
A fortified boyar court at Băjești (Bălilești, Argeș County) from the second half of the 17th century. Ruins of the enclosure wall with towers, the manor house, cellar and stable survive, and the court church of 1666 also survives.
History
The court is a feudal estate typical of the new boyar class of Wallachia in the late 17th century, built by Great Ban Mareș Băjescu. The surviving enclosure wall, the povarnă (service building) and the manor cellar are dated 1666. The court church of the Dormition was built in the same period by the master mason Dragomir and painted in 1669 by the painter Tudoran; the portrait of Dragomir is described as the first craftsman portrait in Wallachian mural painting. The manor house and povarnă are now ruins, and the listing also includes a stable, the enclosure wall with towers and a cemetery. The later owners and 20th-century fate of the manor itself are not documented.
