Summary
A c. 20 m tall fortified boyar tower in the Racovița district of Mioveni (Argeș County), dated 1806 and rebuilt after a fire in 1877. It houses the Constantin Năstase Ethnographic Museum, run by Mioveni town.
History
A plaque on the south facade gives 1806 as the building date, and it is attributed to Colonel (polcovnic) Nicolae Racoviceanu; oral tradition gives 1786. The museum guide describes it as a three-level defensive refuge. Racoviceanu was killed in a robbery. A fire in 1877 damaged it and it was rebuilt in 1878 by his nephew Grigore Racoviceanu. In 1925 the owner I. A. Dobrovitz re-roofed and re-plastered it, and the Ministry of Culture renovated it in 1973-1975. It has housed an ethnographic museum founded by two teachers, a father and his son, which was donated to Mioveni City Council in 2009.
