Summary
One of the oldest fortified boyar towers in Romania, in Măldărești near Horezu (Vâlcea County), dated to the 16th century with later rebuilding. Restituted to the Greceanu heirs in 2007 and bought by Vâlcea County in 2021, it belongs to the Măldărești museum complex and is slated for EU-funded rehabilitation.
Legal status
Class A listed monument; restituted in kind in 2007 (High Court ruling), purchased by the county in 2021 ↗
History
Romanian Wikipedia dates the tower to the 16th century (c. 1517), built on an older structure by jupan Gheorghe Măldărescu and his wife Eva; other accounts give 1516, or a 17th-century origin with a rebuild in 1780-1790, so the dating is disputed. It passed to the Greceanu family and in about 1934 the painter Olga Greceanu painted a fresco of the founders and their ancestors. After nationalisation it was conserved in 1966-1967 and became a museum, later used as a film set. A court ruling of 23 October 2007 restituted it in kind, with outbuildings and about 5,000 m² of land, to a private heir. The county leased it for its museum, and the owners later offered it for sale (starting price 400,000 EUR). In October 2020 Vâlcea County Council voted to exercise its pre-emption right, and the council president stated in February 2022 that the county had bought it in 2021. In November 2025 the county approved documentation for EU-funded rehabilitation of the Greceanu and Duca towers.
