History

Gheorghiță Măldărescu built the tower between 1812 and 1827 with battlements on every level, a reinforced door and a trapdoor closing the stairs. Politician I.G. Duca bought it in 1910 and furnished it in the traditional Romanian style with ethnographic objects from the Horezu area. He also built a memorial holiday house nearby in 1912, designed by Alexandru Ștefănescu. The state took ownership in 1962 and carried out conservation and restoration in 1966-1967. The cula was used as a film set in several 1969-1982 productions. Today it belongs to the Măldărești Museum Complex run by the Aurelian Sacerdoțeanu county museum. In November 2025 Vâlcea County Council approved documentation for an EU-funded rehabilitation of the cula, well, Duca house and annex (over 18.7 million lei).
