Summary

A late 19th-century eclectic manor in Călmățui (Grivița commune, Galați County), beside the Saint George church, which belonged to the boyar Tache Anastasiu, former prefect of Tecuci. He left the estate to the Romanian Academy by will on condition that a school operate there. Press reports from 2013 to 2023 describe it as in advanced decay, with part of it used as a kindergarten.

Legal status

Category B historic monument; left by will (1897) to the Romanian Academy, which took possession in 1910 ↗

History

The manor belonged to Dimitrie (Tache) Anastasiu (1836-1900), a jurist, prefect of Tecuci and senator, described by Sos Patrimoniu as a co-founder of the National Liberal Party. He bought the Călmățui estate around the 1880s; according to a heritage expert quoted by Adevărul in 2015, the eclectic style points to construction in the last two decades of the 19th century, though it is unclear whether a house already stood there. By his will of 1897 he left the Călmățui and Țigănești estates to the Romanian Academy on condition that schools be set up in the manors; the Academy took possession in 1910 after the will was challenged by his brother. The manor became an eight-grade school with an agricultural section. The building has a porch with cylindrical columns and a small belvedere (foișor). It is a category B monument. Reports from 2013 describe cracked walls and stairs, and in 2015 PVC windows and an unapproved sanitary block in the courtyard were criticised by the county heritage directorate. In 2021 and 2023 press reports still described advanced decay, a kindergarten group using part of the building, and a lack of funds for restoration.
