Summary

The neoclassical manor of the Moldavian poet Costache Conachi at Țigănești, Munteni commune, Galați County, tied in tradition to the planning of the Union of the Principalities. Owned by the Romanian Academy and badly degraded, it is slated for a EU-funded restoration of over 44 million lei run by the county council.

Legal status

Restituted to the Romanian Academy in 2016; county council administers it for restoration under a 2023 agreement ↗

History

Costache Conachi was born (1778) and died (1849) at the manor and wrote much of his poetry there. In 1881 the estate was sold to the politician Tache Anastasiu, whose 1897 will left it to the Romanian Academy, which ran an agricultural school there; the side wings date from 1912, and earthquake damage of 1940 was repaired in 1942. Under communism it housed a state farm and later steelworks-linked organisations, and after 1990 a hotel company ran it as a motel. The Academy reclaimed it in 2009 and obtained restitution in 2016. In late 2023 the Academy and Galați County Council signed a 10-year cooperation agreement under which the council administers and restores it, aiming at its c. 1840 look. In July 2025 the council announced the investment indicators for the project, over 44 million lei.
