Plagino Manor
Conacul Plagino
Cândeşti, Vrancea
Listed as not accessible by Monumente Uitate
Summary
The manor of the boyar Alexandru Plagino in Cândești, near Dumbrăveni (Vrancea County), standing on a promontory in the village. It is listed by Monumente Uitate as having no current function and not accessible.
History
The manor belonged to Alexandru Plagino (1821-1894), a Wallachian politician who was finance minister in 1861-1862, president of the Senate and ambassador, and a former prefect of the Bucharest police. His estate of tens of thousands of hectares gave the nearby village of Dumbrăveni the name Plagineşti. Plagino died at Plăginești in 1894. Next to the manor stood his funerary monument, with a crypt and a column-supported structure crowned by a marble flame. German shelling in the First World War brought down the columns, and the surviving marble flame now stands in a roundabout at Dumbrăveni. The manor was damaged under the communist regime.
