Summary

A mid-19th-century manor in Comloșu Mare (Timiș County) built for the Nákó (Nacu) family and later known as the San Marco castle. Today it is split, with one part housing the town hall and another in private hands.

History

The Nacu (Nákó) family, Macedo-Romanian in origin, bought the Comloșu Mare estate in 1781. Hungarian sources say the castle was built by János Nákó before 1848, and the monuments list dates it to 1840-1846. When the traveller Franz Xaver Eckert passed through in 1857 he described a noble castle with a very large park and a three-storey barn; he reports that the owner, Nako, was long absent and had refused to let the Szeged-Timișoara railway cross his estate. The house later became known as the San Marco castle after the Duchess of San Marco. The building is now divided between a private owner and the commune's town hall.
