Summary

An 18th-century manor of the Csekonics family in the middle of Jimbolia (Zsombolya), once set in a six-hectare English-style park. Bought by the town in the 1920s-30s, it is described as renovated, municipally owned and housing the town hall.

History

The manor already appears on an 1802 cadastral map and may date from the time of József Csekonics. Memoirs speak of 49 rooms. A fire in 1889 is reported, though it is unclear whether it hit this castle or the neighbouring Csitó castle, and the east wing was demolished in 1907-1908. After World War I the family and estate administration used it; a letter indicates it was sold to the village in 1925 and furnishings went to Budapest in 1927. Another account says the commune bought it in 1935 and renovated it, and that the town hall has been housed there since 1937. The building, originally U-shaped, is now L-shaped after the demolition of a wing.
