Summary

A Neoclassical mansion with a medieval-style tower, built in 1864 for Count Kálmán Nakó to designs by Miklós Ybl in the centre of Sânnicolau Mare. It now houses the town's cultural centre and city museum with a Béla Bartók hall.

History

The Nakó (Nacu) family, Aromanians from Greece who became Catholic, bought the Sânnicolau estate at auction in 1781. Count Kálmán Nakó built the mansion from 1864 to designs by Miklós Ybl, and it held a library of about 5,000 volumes, paintings, porcelain and letters from Liszt, Wagner and Deák. Count Sándor Nakó's gambling losses forced a sale, and a Budapest banker named Schiffer bought it; the collections largely disappeared after the First World War. It then served as an agricultural school, a Legionary headquarters (1941), barracks, a tractor-driver school (1949-1951) and a school again (1953-1955). The Béla Bartók museum opened there in 1981 and a Pioneers' House operated there in the 1980s, and after 1989 it housed a discotheque, computer club, House of Culture and the city museum.
