Papolczy-Bay Manor, Seini
Conacul Papolczy-Bay · Papolczy–Bay-kúria (Szinérváralja)
Seini, Maramureș · Strada Cetății
Summary
A late-19th-century manor at 1 Cetății Street in Seini (Maramureș County, historically Satu Mare County), named after the Papolczy and Bay families. It later served as a school dormitory, cooperative office and gas company office, and has stood empty and deteriorating.
History
The house was built in the second half of the 19th century as a residence. The Papolczy family were among the major landowners of the area in the early 20th century, and fencing coach Béla Bay was born in the building in 1907. It later served successively as the enlistment headquarters of the 20th Infantry Division (1939), a boarding school for the local gymnasium and an office of the 'Constructorul' cooperative. After 1989 it housed the local gas company, and for a time a home for the elderly. Castle in Transylvania describes it as empty and quickly deteriorating, with a disorganised courtyard; Hungarian Wikipedia noted works in progress in 2012.
