Conacul Nicolae Coculescu
Constantinești (Scornicești), Olt · Strada Constantinești
Summary
A neoclassical manor at the north end of Constantinești village (Scornicești, Olt County), home of the astronomer Nicolae Coculescu. It is now owned by the local council and has been renovated in recent years.
Legal status
Expropriated and nationalised in March 1949 (Decree 83); now municipal property ↗
History
The house was built around 1850 by the Crețulescu family, reportedly to plans by an Italian architect. It later belonged to the Coculescu family as part of a 597-hectare estate held by Lucreția Coculescu, and the astronomer Nicolae Coculescu lived there between the wars; their children, the writer Piu-Șerban Coculescu (Pius Servien) and Manglina, grew up here. The 1945 land reform cut the estate to 50 hectares. Under Decree 83 of 2 March 1949 the owners were expropriated and evicted, and the manor became state property, serving among other things as an educational institution and a farm cooperative office. It now belongs to the Constantinești town hall and has been renovated.
