Summary

A ruined boyar manor in Ceplenița, Iași County, begun around 1600 by the Ureche family and rebuilt about 1835 by the Cantacuzino-Pașcanu family. Burned in the 1980s and stripped of material after 1989, it survives as exterior walls and cellars, with a youth association working to draw attention to it.

Legal status

Expropriated after 1948 and transferred to the village; listed historic monument LMI IS-II-m-B-04119 ↗

History

The fortified court was built around 1600-1605 by the boyar Nestor Ureche, father of the chronicler Grigore Ureche, and stayed with the Ureche family until 1647, when it passed by sale to the Cantacuzino family through marriage. Around 1835 Iordache Cantacuzino-Pașcanu built a larger house on the old foundations, with a carriage porch on four columns bearing the family eagle. After 1857 it went through in-laws and then, in 1868, to the Zarifopol family. Following expropriation it served as a school and then a cultural centre and library. A major fire in the 1980s destroyed much of it, and after 1989 stone and brick were carried off. A presidential commission report of 2009 described continuing destruction. Since 2020 a youth association has been researching the site.
