Summary

The Bethlen-Solymosy castle of Tirimia (Hungarian Nagyteremi), Gheorghe Doja commune, Mureș County, stood on a hillside and passed from the Bethlen family to the Solymossy and then the Vayak families. It was demolished in the 20th century and only a small single-storey part survives.

History

According to the Népújság article, Prince Mihály Apafi gave the Teremi estate to Count János Bethlen in 1662, and in the late 19th century Count Kamillo Bethlen owned the hillside castle; a description from the late 1860s calls it a 'new' castle in a beautiful setting. Hungarian Wikipedia says Count Kamilló Bethlen built a castle on the hillside at the end of the 18th century, and separately that János Bethlen had a manor house built there in 1568. After the Bethlens the castle passed to the Solymossy family and then to the Vayak family. Hungarian Wikipedia says it was destroyed after the First World War and its ruins are visible; the historian Attila Kálmán, cited by Népújság, dates the demolition to the 1930s and links it to the 1921 land reform and the economic difficulties of the decade. Only a small single-storey building remains, and Kálmán recommends preserving it. The Bethlen crypts stand at the top of the village cemetery.
