History

Dumitru Alimănișteanu, a finance minister in 1945, set up model farms on his Bilcești estate and built an imposing manor there in about 1938-1943. It was designed by the architect Octav Doicescu in a Romanian style, with stone and exposed-brick walls and a shingle roof, and was meant to become an old people's home. In 1947 he was forced to donate the estate to the Romanian Academy, and it served as a fruit-growing research station until 2002. The manor was later nationalised. A fire in 1999 damaged it, and it has not been rebuilt since, despite its listed status.
