History
A noble manor stood here by the mid-16th century. György Sükösd transformed it in the 1620s-1630s and died in 1631 before completion; bastions and curtain walls were finished around 1637. Prince György Rákóczi I seized the estate in 1633 and Péter Budai held it from 1667 until his death in 1694, when it passed to the Bethlen family; Samuel Bethlen is linked to the southern wing and the gate tower (dated 1700). In 1863 Count Sámuel Teleki bought the estate, and the castle declined; the eastern wing was auctioned and demolished in 1918. The communal landowners' organisation of Racoș bought the castle in 1903 and still holds it. It later served as a gendarmerie post, and under communism as a stable and grain store, with the wall partly broken through for machinery. Partial restoration began in the early 1990s but was never completed.
