Summary

A Renaissance castle at Hoghiz (Brașov County) with a polygonal plan, two towers and a park, traditionally built on the site of a medieval monastery and called Haller or Kálnoky castle after later owners. The Haller manor house beside it, now a school, is a separate listed monument.

History

The castle is said to have been built in 1553 on the ruins of a monastery first documented in 1311. In 1667 Prince Mihai Apafi I gave the estate to Tamás Borsai Nagy, and in 1684 it passed to the Bethlen family; Countess Kata Bethlen lived here and wrote her autobiography here. The local name Kálnoky castle comes from Anna Haller's marriage to György Kálnoky in 1838-1840. János Haller bought the estate at auction after 1892, and it was sold in 1923. Next to it stands the Haller manor house (16th-19th century), a separate building that now houses a school.
