History

Săcel is first mentioned in 1440 and belonged to the Zeyk and later Naláczy families. In the mid-19th century László Nopcsa took the estate over unpaid debts, and Elek Nopcsa built the castle around 1872. Franz (Ferenc) Nopcsa, the last male of the line and a noted paleontologist, lived there; he died in 1933 after killing his secretary. The castle was nationalised in 1921, returned briefly in 1933 to a nephew, and nationalised again in 1949. It held internees in 1944-45 and later an auxiliary school, which left in 2009, after which the building decayed. Heirs of Ilona Nopcsa, who moved to Italy, did not claim it after 1989. The county council began restoration in 2019, financed through PNDL II and its own budget, and the castle opened with a first temporary exhibition on 1 September 2025.
