History
The court was the symbol of the Sălașu knezate between the 14th and 17th centuries and was built around an older tower guarding the village entrance. The rectangular enclosure, with walls over 1 m thick and towers at the corners and along the sides, held a stone residence for the knez and a court chapel with a bell tower, founded in the 17th century at the earliest and later used as a Calvinist chapel. Its dimensions are given as about 99 by 35 m on Romanian Wikipedia and as 95 by 55 m by Transylvania in Ruins. After the last male Cândreș died, the estate passed to the Mara family, who gained full rights in the second half of the 17th century after a lawsuit with the Cândreș heirs in the female line; according to Transylvania in Ruins, Austrian troops later devastated and burned the fortress. Archaeological excavations in 1977 found occupation within the enclosure in the 15th century, with surviving buildings of the 16th-17th centuries, and in 2014 a preventive dig of 152 m2 was carried out at the commune's request ahead of a rehabilitation and restoration project for the court. In 2024 only the west gate tower and wall sections 3-4 m high were reported to remain, overgrown and partly hidden behind outdated information panels.
