Summary

A two-storey baroque-style castle with a corner tower and a dendrological park at Păclișa (Totești commune), near Hațeg. Returned to the Pogány heirs, it was offered to the state for 500,000 EUR in 2015 and the state declined to buy.

Legal status

Returned to the Pogány heirs; state pre-emption declined in April 2015 ↗

History

The castle in its present form was most likely built in the second half of the 19th century by rebuilding and extending an 18th-century structure, in several phases. It belonged to the Pogány family; one family member, György Pogány, captured the miners' leader Varga Katalin in 1847. After nationalisation it housed a rehabilitation centre for disabled children, and Romanian Wikipedia says the Russian army built barracks in the compound after the war. Partial renovations took place in the 1990s. The estate was returned to the Pogány heirs and in April 2015 Artmark Historical Estate announced that the Ministry of Culture had declined the state's pre-emption right at 500,000 EUR, so the castle could be sold by auction or privately. Whether a sale was completed is not known.
