Summary
The 'Red Castle' of Lilieci (Hemeiuș commune, Bacău County) is a 1860s brick castle set in a dendrological park. Since 1955 the estate has been used by a forestry research station.
History
The castle was built in the 1860s (1864-1866 in the Wikipedia text, 1864-1880 in the infobox) by the boyar families of Grigore Cantacuzino and Costache Pașcanu, and later passed through inheritance to Lucia Schomburg-Waldenburg, who developed the botanical garden. The 49.5 ha dendrological park was laid out between 1880 and 1913. The estate was requisitioned by the state in 1919, according to one press account, and the princes left the country after 1944. In 1955 the manor and park became a branch of the forestry research institute ICAS (Stațiunea de Cercetări Silvice Hemeiuș), and over 60 plant species were introduced.
