Summary

A Transylvanian Renaissance castle at Aghireșu (Cluj County), built in 1572 on a quadrangular plan with four corner bastions. It is now a ruin, with only the bastions and some wall sections standing.

History

The castle was built in 1572 in Transylvanian Renaissance style, with stone door and window frames carved by masons from Cluj. In 1594 Prince Zsigmond Báthory granted it to István Csáky. István Bocskai later obtained it and in 1606 left it to László Bánffy and the Haller family. In the 17th century it belonged to the Gyulaffy family. It began to decay around 1900, and people still lived in the ruined building until 1948. Today only the corner bastions and some wall sections remain.
