Csáky Castle, Almașu
Castelul Csáky · Csáky-kastély (Sarmaság)
sat Almașu; comuna Almașu, Sălaj · 316
Summary
A baroque manor built by the Csáky family at Almașu, Sălaj County, between about 1808 and 1819 with stone reused from the older Almașu fortress. It was once the largest manor in the Călata area, but its outbuildings were demolished and it is described as being in a poor state.
History
The Almașu estate was granted in 1594 by Prince Sigismund Báthory to István Csáky, commander of the Transylvanian armies. His descendants began the present building in 1808 (the heritage list gives 1815-1819), reusing worked stones from the Almașu fortress. Because of its size and its outbuildings it was called the largest manor of the Călata country. The outbuildings were later demolished and the main house fell into a ruinous state.
