History
Count Lázár Karátsonyi built the castle in 1793 on older foundations (a 1939 newspaper says 1783); the family lived there for 142 years. In 1935 the last count sold the estate to Princess Elisabeth of Greece, who renovated it; its decoration is said to have inspired the Elisabeta Palace in Bucharest. After 1948 the statues were vandalised and the library and archive burned. Later uses were a state farm, forestry office, retirement home, orphanage and school (from 1983 until the 1991 earthquake). The 1991 earthquake damaged the attic and ceiling. In 2009 the town hall transferred it to the Metropolis of Banat; a 2014 article described it as ruined, and in 2025 a project to turn it into a tourist complex was reported.
